- Frequently Asked Questions
These are the university’s general admission standards, not universal scores for every degree. Courses involving nursing, teaching or other professional requirements may have different English conditions. La Trobe’s official English language requirements provide the current score tables.
Current La Trobe PTE Scores by Course Level
La Trobe uses English proficiency bands for admission. The current policy identifies three general bands, while the university also publishes higher test-score equivalents for courses with more demanding English requirements.
| PTE Academic | Band A | Band B | Band C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall | 39 | 47 | 55 |
| Reading | 42 | 48 | 54 |
| Listening | 40 | 47 | 53 |
| Writing | 41 | 51 | 60 |
| Speaking | 39 | 54 | 66 |
Band A corresponds to IELTS 5.5, Band B to IELTS 6.0 and Band C to IELTS 6.5 under La Trobe’s general admission framework. For many undergraduate programs, Band B is the relevant starting point. Postgraduate coursework and graduate research commonly use Band C.
La Trobe’s English Language Entry Requirements Policy is the authoritative reference for these bands. One feature of the new scores is easy to overlook: an individual skill minimum can be higher than the overall minimum. A student applying under Band C could have 60 overall and still miss the requirement if Speaking is below 66.
What Changed in La Trobe’s PTE Requirements in 2025?
Older La Trobe guides often mention PTE 50 for undergraduate study and 58 for postgraduate study. Those figures come from the previous score framework.
The university’s policy now distinguishes between applications submitted before and after 9 May 2025.
| English band | Previous PTE requirement | Revised requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Band A | 50 overall, 46 each | 39 overall; skill-specific minimums |
| Band B | 50 overall, 50 each | 47 overall; skill-specific minimums |
| Band C | 58 overall, 50 each | 55 overall; skill-specific minimums |
The change is more complicated than a simple reduction in overall scores. Under Band C, for example, the overall minimum fell from 58 to 55, but the Speaking minimum rose from 50 to 66. Writing also increased to 60.
The current policy version took effect on 16 October 2025, retaining the distinction between older and newer application dates. That explains why a 2023 or 2024 course guide may show a very different La Trobe PTE score from the current admissions website.
Undergraduate PTE Requirements
La Trobe’s general international admissions guidance lists IELTS Academic 6.0 overall, with no band below 6.0, as the usual undergraduate English level. Under the revised PTE equivalence table, this corresponds to Band B.
A student applying for a general undergraduate degree would therefore normally work towards the 47-overall PTE standard, including its separate skill minimums. That does not mean every bachelor’s degree uses Band B. The English level attached to the course remains decisive.
Why the individual scores deserve attention
Consider an applicant whose result is:
| Component | PTE score |
|---|---|
| Overall | 57 |
| Reading | 55 |
| Listening | 52 |
| Writing | 53 |
| Speaking | 50 |
Although the overall score is above 47, Speaking falls below Band B’s required 54. The result would not satisfy that band. This is why the PTE requirement for La Trobe University cannot be reduced to one overall number.
Postgraduate and Research English Requirements
Many master’s degrees and graduate research programs use Band C, equivalent to IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. The revised PTE Academic standard for that band is 55 overall, with different minimums for each skill. La Trobe’s postgraduate application guidance confirms the usual IELTS 6.5 English level and explains that individual programs may require more.
A higher qualification does not automatically mean that every component needs the same score. The revised PTE framework has particularly demanding Speaking and Writing minimums, even where the overall score appears relatively low. Applicants to research degrees should also check their proposed program’s academic and research admission conditions separately.
Higher English Scores for Professional Courses
Some La Trobe degrees use English standards above Band C. The university’s current equivalence table also includes IELTS 7.0 and 7.5 levels.
| Course English standard | PTE overall | Reading | Listening | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS 7.0, minimum 6.5 each | 65 | 59 | 58 | 69 | 76 |
| IELTS 7.0, minimum 7.0 each | 66 | 59 | 58 | 69 | 76 |
| IELTS 7.5, minimum 7.0 each | 71 | 65 | 64 | 77 | 83 |
These are La Trobe’s published equivalence levels for PTE tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. They are not automatically the requirements for every health or teaching course.
Nursing has separate registration-related rules
The La Trobe Bachelor of Nursing admission page directs applicants to the English language requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). Applicants must establish an accepted English pathway, which may involve recognised education, an approved English test or eligible existing registration. La Trobe also requires a nursing English declaration.
Older university handbooks show PTE 65 in each skill for Nursing. Those historical figures should not be used automatically for a new application, especially after the professional English-test changes in April 2026. For Nursing, the current course requirements and NMBA standard take precedence over a general university conversion table.
Can Previous Education Meet La Trobe’s English Requirement?
A PTE test is not compulsory for every international applicant. La Trobe considers qualifying secondary and tertiary education, as well as certain recognised English-medium study and work experience.
The conditions differ according to the admission band and the type of evidence being used. Completing a degree taught in English does not necessarily remove the English-test requirement, particularly for programs linked to professional registration. The university’s English Language Entry Requirements Policy explains the alternative evidence routes.
Applicants who have recently completed a La Trobe bachelor’s degree may also be able to use that qualification to meet the minimum postgraduate English standard, depending on their circumstances.
English Pathways Through La Trobe College Australia
Students who meet the academic requirements for their intended course but need additional English preparation may be eligible for an English language pathway. La Trobe College Australia provides English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS), alongside foundation and diploma programs.
Its pathway options range from approximately 10 weeks to 12 months, depending on the type of program and entry arrangement. The La Trobe pathways page explains how eligible students can study English before progressing into a pathway program or university degree. A pathway offer is not the same as direct admission to every La Trobe course. Some professional programs impose separate English conditions.
How Long Is a PTE Result Valid for La Trobe?
The university generally requires English proficiency evidence to be no more than two years old, unless an exception is specified. The applicable timing is assessed against the anticipated date of first enrolment. If you are planning to defer admission, check whether your result will still be acceptable when the new course begins.
La Trobe also states that when applicants provide results from more than one English test, it considers the most recent single achievement for admission. It does not generally combine the best components from separate PTE attempts.
La Trobe Admission English vs Australian Student Visa English
The La Trobe English requirement for PTE is separate from the English evidence required for an Australian Student visa. For PTE Academic tests taken from 7 August 2025, the standard Student visa English threshold is generally 47 overall, subject to the applicable visa conditions and exceptions.
That number happens to match La Trobe’s Band B overall minimum. It does not mean that meeting the Student visa score automatically satisfies university admission. Band B also has individual skill minimums, while some courses require Band C or higher.
PTEClasses explains the immigration requirement in its PTE for Student Visa guide. The official visa conditions are available from the Department of Home Affairs.
Submitting Your PTE Academic Result to La Trobe
Applicants using PTE Academic for La Trobe should provide an official Pearson result that satisfies the requirements of their chosen course. A practice-test score is not acceptable admission evidence.
La Trobe may verify English proficiency directly with the testing provider. Your result and identification details should therefore correspond to the application being assessed.
The university also requires applicants to meet the academic entry conditions of their course. A qualifying PTE result does not replace subject prerequisites, prior qualifications or other selection requirements.
Preparing for the Revised PTE Scores
The 2025 changes make individual skill scores especially important. For Band C, Speaking now requires 66 and Writing 60. Someone who prepared for the older 58-overall/50-each requirement may need to change their preparation priorities.
Review your performance against the correct English band rather than concentrating only on the overall score. PTEClasses offers PTE Practice Questions for individual task practice. The PTE Score Calculator can also help you review your practice results against your target.
These resources are for preparation; La Trobe assesses accepted official English evidence.
Final Thoughts
The La Trobe PTE requirement changed in 2025, introducing lower overall scores but different minimums for each skill. Many undergraduate courses use Band B, while postgraduate programs commonly use Band C. Professional courses may have higher or separate English conditions. For a new application, use the current university admission policy and the specific course page rather than an older PTE 50 or 58 score chart.
Frequently Asked Questions
Find clear answers to common questions about this topic.
Does La Trobe accept PTE Academic Online?
La Trobe’s current English-test table names PTE Academic. Applicants should confirm whether a particular delivery format is accepted rather than assume an at-home result is equivalent to an approved test-centre examination. Home Affairs separately excludes fully online English tests for Australian visa purposes.
Does La Trobe accept IELTS One Skill Retake?
Yes. The university’s current English language policy lists IELTS Academic, including One Skill Retake, among its accepted evidence options.
Can I combine scores from two PTE tests?
La Trobe states that where applicants have multiple English test results, the most recent single achievement is considered. It does not provide a general option to combine the strongest component scores from different attempts.
Can I receive a conditional offer before meeting the English requirement?
A conditional offer may be available where the applicant has not yet provided acceptable English evidence. The outstanding requirement must be satisfied according to the conditions and deadlines of the offer.
Is the PTE requirement the same for La Trobe College Australia?
No. English-language, foundation and diploma pathways have their own entry conditions. The university’s Band B or Band C minimum should not automatically be applied to every College program.
Can I use PTE Academic taken overseas?
An eligible PTE Academic result from an authorised overseas test centre may be accepted, provided it satisfies La Trobe’s score, validity and verification conditions.
