Summarize Group Discussion

The summary group discussion pte follows a simple sequence.

• 1. Listen to the DiscussionThree people are discussing a topic. The recording is only played once and can last for up to three minutes.Keep your focus from the start because you will need to take notes and understand the discussion.

• Active ListeningListen to the speaker’s main ideas and topics.
• Note-TakingInstead of writing every word, use abbreviations and keywords to save time.
• OrganisationSort your notes according to the speaker, so that you can remember who has contributed what.

You can identify areas of your summary that lack detail by recording your responses. This will also allow you to identify any pauses or unclear pronunciation.

A method of taking notes using a speaker can be helpful.

• TopicThe main topic should be at the top.
• Speaker 1Note down their main point of view and at least two supporting arguments.
• Speaker 2Note the main contribution of each person and whether or not they agree with you, disagree, add another perspective, etc.
• Speaker 3Note down their main point, any conclusions or solutions.
• ConnectionsUse simple symbols to mark relationships between ideas, such as:
  • + for agreement
  • ≠ for disagreement
  • - for solution or result
  • ? For an important issue

• Listen for main ideas.Don’t try to memorize every sentence. Concentrate on the main points made by each speaker, and the details that support them.
• Take Short NotesUse abbreviations and symbols. You may miss out on important information if you write complete sentences.

• Note ConnectionsListen to what a speaker says, whether they agree, disagree, add information, or reply.

• Step 1: Listen without WritingListen only to the main topic. You will learn to listen for the main message.
• Step 2: Add Speaker NotesRecord the main ideas of each speaker. You do not need to write down every word.
• Step 3: Determine RelationshipsMark whether the speaker agrees or disagrees, adds another perspective, suggests a solution, etc.
• Step 4: Write a summaryYou can use your notes to describe the discussion using your own words. Be sure to include all important contributions in the summary.
• Step 5: Record yourselfListen to the recording you made and make sure that your pronunciation, fluency, pauses, and organisation are correct.
• Step 6: Practise Under Time LimitsAfter you are comfortable with the task and have a good understanding of it, practice using the actual response and preparation timings.

Imagine that three students are debating whether or not universities should offer more online learning opportunities.

Another speaker believes that online classes offer students more flexibility. One speaker argues that face-to-face interactions are better for some students. The third speaker proposes combining the two approaches by using a blended system.

• Sample ResponseThe discussion focused on the question of whether universities should offer more online learning opportunities. The first speaker emphasized the flexibility online classes can offer students. The second speaker explained how face-to-face classes can be more beneficial for students who are able to benefit from direct interactions. The third speaker suggested a blended learning approach that incorporates online and classroom education. The speakers considered the benefits of traditional and online education, and a blend of both was suggested as a solution.

A sample response should demonstrate paraphrasing and organisation. You should adjust your response to what you hear during the actual task.

• Try to Write EverythingYou can be distracted from listening if you write complete sentences. Instead, use short keywords.
• Focus on one speaker.This task requires a discussion in a group. Be sure to include all important contributions made by each speaker in your summary.
• Replaying the AudioRepeating the same sentences can make you appear less natural. Keep the original meaning but use your own words.
• Add Your Personal OpinionsIt is your job to summarize the discussion. You should not express your opinion unless it is specifically required.
• Ignoring relationships between ideasMention the relationship between speakers if it’s important for understanding.
• Talking Without StructureYour summary can be difficult to understand if you have a lot of disconnected points. Organise your responses around the speaker’s main ideas and the topic.
