Before taking the PTE Academic test, check the English language requirements for the exact course you want to study. The general minimum is a starting point, but the course’s official entry requirements are the most important.

Minimum PTE Score for Monash University

For direct admission to many Monash courses, the university accepts the following PTE Academic results:

PTE Academic component Minimum score
Overall 58
Listening 50
Reading 50
Writing 50
Speaking 50

Both conditions matter: the overall result must reach 58, and each skill must reach at least 50. For instance, a candidate with 64 overall and 49 in Reading would not meet the general standard. Monash publishes its accepted English tests and minimum scores on the official English language entry requirements.

Why Your Monash Course Matters More Than the General Minimum

An applicant comparing degrees in engineering, business and nursing might see very different English requirements.

The Monash PTE requirement is not determined only by whether the degree is a bachelor's or master's. The course's professional obligations and admission conditions can also influence the score.

Undergraduate and Postgraduate Coursework

Many coursework degrees use the general 58 overall and 50 per skill requirement. A master's degree does not automatically require a higher English score simply because it is postgraduate. Monash publishes the specific conditions through its course finder. The entry requirements for the chosen degree are the appropriate reference before applying.

Bachelor of Nursing

Nursing is an important exception. For PTE Academic tests taken from 23 April 2026, the published Bachelor of Nursing English scores are:

Component Minimum
Overall 63
Listening 58
Reading 59
Writing 60
Speaking 76

Speaking is substantially higher than the university-wide minimum.

These scores reflect the English language standard relevant to nursing registration. Applicants should follow the Bachelor of Nursing admission requirements rather than relying on the general university table.

Graduate Research

PhD and research master's applicants have a separate English framework. For several faculties, including Engineering, Information Technology and Science, Monash publishes PTE Academic 58 overall with at least 50 in each skill.

Other faculties use higher thresholds, including 65 overall and 58 in each component. Graduate research also has a shorter English-test evidence period than some coursework admission routes. Monash's graduate research English requirements should be checked for the relevant faculty.

Is PTE 50 Enough for Monash?

A PTE overall score of 50 is below the general direct-entry standard. The number 50 refers to the minimum in each individual skill, not the overall score. A candidate could achieve 59 overall with Listening 55, Reading 52, Writing 50 and Speaking 61 and satisfy the general score condition.

Someone with 50 overall would not. That distinction matters when applicants compare the PTE score for Monash University with informal score charts or advice from other students.

Can Previous English-Medium Education Replace PTE?

Not every international student needs an English test. Monash recognises certain previous education completed in English, provided the study meets its published conditions.

The university may consider where the education took place, the qualification level, how long the applicant studied and whether the teaching and assessment were conducted in English.

A degree taught in English does not automatically establish eligibility for an exemption. Applicants should review their actual education history against Monash's requirements rather than assume a medium-of-instruction letter will be sufficient.

What Happens If Your PTE Score Is Below the Requirement?

A result below the direct-entry minimum does not necessarily end the admission process. Monash offers English-language pathways for eligible students who meet the other conditions of their intended course.

Depending on the applicant's circumstances, Monash English or a suitable Monash College pathway may be available. There is an important difference between these options.

Monash College foundation and diploma programs can have their own entry requirements. A score accepted for a pathway program should not be treated as equivalent to direct entry into a Monash University degree.

The appropriate route depends on the qualification you want, your academic background and your current English evidence.

How Long Is PTE Valid for Monash?

The accepted age of a PTE result depends on the admission route. Monash's general coursework English requirements can allow evidence within a three-year period, subject to the applicable conditions.

For graduate research, the published test validity period is generally less than two years. The date used to assess validity also matters. A result may be acceptable when you begin planning an application but become too old by the relevant admission date.

If your test was taken several years ago, check the university's current evidence rules before paying for another attempt.

Monash Admission Scores and Student Visa Scores Are Different

The Monash English requirement PTE score should not be mixed up with the minimum English level needed for an Australian Student visa. For PTE Academic tests taken from 7 August 2025, Home Affairs usually sets 47 as the standard English score for a Student visa, but there are special rules for certain courses and specific situations.

Monash's general direct-entry requirement is higher. Meeting the visa threshold therefore does not establish that you qualify for your preferred university course.

The PTEClasses PTE for Student Visa guide covers the immigration requirement separately.

Sending Your PTE Result to Monash

Use the official Pearson Score Report when providing English evidence. Monash may verify the result through Pearson's score-sharing system. If you have taken PTE more than once, ensure that the report and identifying details belong to the attempt you want the university to assess.

A practice-test result cannot replace an official PTE Academic score. Students who receive conditional offers should follow the English-evidence deadline stated in their offer.

An acceptable PTE result also does not remove the need to satisfy academic prerequisites or other course-specific conditions.

Preparing for the PTE Score Your Course Requires

The PTE score Monash applicants should target depends on the course. Consider a student applying for a degree that uses the general 58/50 standard.

Their recent practice results are:

Skill Practice result
Listening 62
Reading 58
Writing 48
Speaking 60
Overall 59

Writing is the only component below the required minimum.

In that situation, more general Reading practice would contribute little to the immediate goal. The candidate would be better served by reviewing Writing task performance.

PTEClasses provides PTE Practice Questions for individual task types and a PTE Score Calculator for reviewing practice results.

These tools can support preparation, but the university will rely on accepted official evidence.

Final Thoughts

For many undergraduate and coursework postgraduate degrees, the Monash University PTE requirement is 58 overall with at least 50 in every communicative skill. Nursing and some graduate research programs have different thresholds, so the general score should not be treated as universal. Check the specific course, confirm the accepted age of your English evidence and consider an approved pathway if your current result falls short.
