PTE Score for ANMAC Skills Assessment: Current English Requirement

PTE Score for ANMAC Skills Assessment: Current English Requirement

If you are applying for an ANMAC Full Skills Assessment, the current PTE score for ANMAC is 66 overall, with at least 66 in Listening, 66 in Reading, 56 in Writing and 66 in Speaking. ANMAC also allows up to two PTE Academic sittings within 12 months if its combination rules are met. The important catch is that this English-test requirement does not apply to every ANMAC assessment type.

Current ANMAC PTE Requirement

For a Full Skills Assessment, ANMAC currently accepts PTE Academic with these minimums:

PTE Academic Minimum score
Overall 66
Listening 66
Reading 66
Writing 56
Speaking 66

The ANMAC PTE requirement is therefore different from simply checking an overall result. Writing has a lower threshold, while Listening, Reading and Speaking all require 66. If you are comparing practice results against the ANMAC thresholds, the PTEClasses PTE Score Calculator can help you look at each component separately.

The English Test Depends on Your ANMAC Assessment Type

This is the point most generic nursing-English articles miss. ANMAC has different skills-assessment pathways, and the ANMAC English requirement is not identical across them.

1. Full Skills Assessment

A Full Skills Assessment requires an accepted English language test. ANMAC lists PTE Academic alongside IELTS, OET, TOEFL iBT and Cambridge English. This pathway is used by eligible nurses or midwives who meet ANMAC’s overseas-registration and qualification criteria.

2. Modified Skills Assessment

If you are already registered as a nurse or midwife in Australia or New Zealand and qualify for a Modified Skills Assessment, ANMAC currently says you do not need to provide an English test result. It verifies your Australian or New Zealand registration directly.

3. Direct Care Skills Assessment

ANMAC also states that applicants using the Direct Care Skills Assessment do not provide an English test to ANMAC. Home Affairs deals with the English requirement for the visa stage instead. So before asking what PTE score for ANMAC you need, first establish which assessment pathway applies to you.

Can You Use Two PTE Academic Test Sittings?

Yes, The ANMAC two test sitting rule can be used where both tests fall within a 12-month period and satisfy ANMAC’s conditions.

For PTE Academic:

  • each sitting must have an overall score of at least 66
  • across the two sittings, you need at least 66 in Listening, Reading and Speaking, and 56 in Writing
  • no communicative skill can fall below 56 in either sitting

That last condition is easy to overlook.

Example

Suppose your first sitting is:

Skill Score
Listening 69
Reading 67
Writing 58
Speaking 60
Overall 66

Your second sitting is:

Skill Score
Listening 61
Reading 64
Writing 60
Speaking 68
Overall 67

This may work because the required scores are achieved across the two attempts, each overall result is at least 66, and no individual skill drops below 56. But a score of 55 in any skill in either sitting would break ANMAC’s two-test rule.

Can PTE and IELTS Results Be Combined?

No, ANMAC requires combined test results to come from the same test provider. It specifically says results cannot be mixed across different tests.

That means you cannot use:

  • PTE Speaking from one sitting
  • IELTS Writing from another

To create one qualifying English result. If you start with PTE Academic and plan to rely on two sittings, both need to be PTE.

How Old Can Your PTE Result Be?

For a Full Skills Assessment, ANMAC says English test results must be less than two years old. This is an important difference from some visa English rules that use longer evidence periods.

Do not assume a PTE result is usable for ANMAC just because it can still be accessed through Pearson or because another authority accepted it. For ANMAC, check the test date against the skills-assessment lodgement requirements.

Why ANMAC’s PTE Scores Differ From the Current AHPRA Scores

This distinction is particularly important in 2026. AHPRA’s registration English settings changed in April 2026. ANMAC’s current Full Skills Assessment page, however, still publishes its own PTE Academic threshold of 66 overall, with 66 in Listening, Reading and Speaking and 56 in Writing.

These are separate processes:

  • AHPRA / NMBA deals with professional registration
  • ANMAC deals with migration skills assessment
  • Home Affairs deals with visa eligibility and migration points

A result that works for one authority should not be assumed to work for another. For the registration side, PTEClasses has a dedicated PTE Requirement for Nursing in Australia guide. Keeping those topics separate avoids mixing AHPRA registration rules with the ANMAC skills assessment PTE score.

Is the ANMAC PTE Score the Same as Australian Migration English?

Not necessarily. ANMAC’s English requirement is part of its Full Skills Assessment process. Home Affairs has separate English levels for skilled migration, including Competent, Proficient and Superior English. Those levels can affect visa eligibility or points.

ANMAC itself states that a skills assessment does not guarantee migration points. Home Affairs makes the final decision on visa eligibility and points. So a candidate can satisfy ANMAC’s English requirement and still need to check whether the same PTE result gives the migration English level they want. For that separate question, see the PTEClasses PTE for Australia PR guide.

Which PTE Test Does ANMAC Accept?

The accepted Pearson test is PTE Academic. ANMAC also accepts IELTS Academic, OET for nurses, TOEFL iBT and Cambridge English under its Full Skills Assessment English-test options.

The test needs to be taken through an authorised testing centre. ANMAC says accepted results must come from paper-based or computer-based tests completed at an authorised centre. An at-home or remotely proctored result should not be treated as equivalent.

Do You Need PTE Before Lodging the Full Skills Assessment?

Yes, if PTE is the English evidence you intend to use. ANMAC’s current Full Skills Assessment document list asks applicants to upload official English test results that meet its minimum scores. That means the English test should be sorted before you lodge rather than treated as something to add later. The rest of the application also needs to establish matters such as identity, qualifications, registration and relevant work experience, where applicable.

Full Skills Assessment English Is Only One Part of Eligibility

The PTE result does not decide whether you qualify for a Full Skills Assessment. ANMAC also looks at your nursing or midwifery background. For nurses, the current Full Skills Assessment criteria include requirements around qualification, overseas registration and, in some cases, regulatory examination and work experience in an approved country. Midwifery has its own eligibility conditions. So a high PTE Academic ANMAC result cannot fix an assessment-pathway problem. First confirm that the Full Skills Assessment is actually the right service for your background.

Preparing for the ANMAC Score Pattern

The current scores are unusual because Writing is lower than the other three skills.

If your practice results look like this:

  • Listening 68
  • Reading 67
  • Writing 60
  • Speaking 63
  • Overall 66

Your problem is speaking, not writing. A generic study plan that divides time equally across all four modules would be inefficient. Use your score profile to decide where the work is needed. PTEClasses’ PTE Practice Questions can help you focus on the question types linked to the weaker skill.

Final Thoughts

The current PTE score for ANMAC Full Skills Assessment is 66 overall, with 66 in Listening, 66 in Reading, 56 in Writing and 66 in Speaking. ANMAC can also accept up to two compliant PTE Academic sittings within 12 months. But applicants using a Modified Skills Assessment or Direct Care Skills Assessment do not currently provide an English test to ANMAC, so the assessment type should be checked before booking PTE.
