Before getting into deep, let’s start with the types of tasks you get in the PTE Listening section.

PTE Listening Tasks List

In PTE Listening, there are 8 Tasks that are divided into sections, and the main focus is to test your ability to listen to the English language. Moreover, it also tests reading and writing aspects in some cases.

Summarize Spoken Text:

In this task, Your listening and writing skills will be assessed, and The candidate will be given a short audio clip.

You will get 12 seconds for the preparation; after that preparation time, that audio clip will be played automatically.

The clip will last for 60 to 90 seconds, and the candidate has to listen to that clip carefully and write a brief summary related to the clip you have heard.

You will get 10 minutes which can be used to write a 50 to 70 words summary. The key object in this section is to highlight the crucial points of the audio recording.

The Summarize spoken test response will be judged on the Quality of writing and how well the candidate can respond and present the key points presented in the lecture.

Multiple Choice, Multiple answers

In the Multiple choice, multiple answers task, you will be provided with a recorded audio clip and some multiple-choice checkbox answers below that clip.

The PTE Algorithm allows you for 7 seconds to be prepared. After 7 seconds, the recording will start automatically, and you have to find the correct answers from the recording and select the multiple answers below.

The recording will be 40 to 100 seconds long, and you have to listen to that recording very carefully as it will be played only once.

Multiple Choice, Single answers

This task is quite similar to the multiple-choice, multiple answers task. The procedure of the question is the same, and you will be provided with a recorded audio clip and multiple options to choose your answer.

However, Multiple Choice, Single Answer task, you will have only 5 seconds of preparation time. After that, the recording will be played automatically. In this task, the recording will not exceed more than 30 to 60 seconds.

You have to choose only one answer from the given options below, and The recording will only be played once.

Fill In The Blanks

The Fill In The Blanks task is quite similar to the basic fill in the blanks. However, the difference here is that you have to answer these blanks from the audio recording clip.

You will be provided with the recorded clip where the audio will contain the missing words. You will have 7 seconds for the preparation; after that, the audio clip automatically plays for around 30 to 60 seconds.

The audio clip will be played only once, so listen carefully and find the clip’s missing words.

Highlight Correct Summary

This task is considered the most challenging task in the PTE Listening section. You will be given recorded audio and long multiple-choice questions below it in the Highlight Correct Summary task.

The candidate has to listen to the audio and summarize the topic’s context by selecting the phrase given as the multiple-choice answers.

The preparation time will be 10 seconds; after preparation time, you will listen to the brief recording, which lasts for around 30 to 90 seconds. The recording will be played only once. Once it’s finished, you have to select one answer from the given options which best summarize the recording.

Highlight Incorrect Words.

This task is similar to the correct highlight summary, but the difference here is that you have to select the wrong words from the transcript given below the recording.

You will get an audio clip with a transcript consisting of one or two paragraphs, and the recorder clip will be an audio of the text transcript. However, there will be some words missing or incorrect or not used by the speaker in the audio in the text transcript.

Your task is to find and mark all the missing/incorrect words from the text.

You will have 10 seconds to prepare; after that, the recording will play instantly for around 15 to 60 seconds.

The recording will be played only once, and you must make sure to focus on the recording.

Select Missing Words

This task is a little bit similar to the multiple-choice questions. In the Select Missing Words tasks, you will listen to an audio clip and select the appropriate missing words from the options given below.

You will have 7 seconds to get prepared. After 7 seconds, the audio will start for 30 to 70 seconds.

You will hear a beep sound in the audio, and this is where the words are missing. You have to choose one of the words given below in the questions.

The chosen must be the most appropriate word in that phrase context. Else you will lose your score.

Write from Dictation

The write from Dictation tasks is one of the most important and somehow complex tasks.

In this task, the candidate has 7 seconds to get themself prepared. After that, you will listen to a short audio clip which is a maximum of 5 seconds long.

You have to write the phrase you have listened to in the audio. The more accurately you write that phrase, the more accurate result you’ll get.

In the write from dictation task, your score will be counted as each right word you have written.

Tips For PTE Listening

PTE listening is the module where you boost the PTE score, as it is a more accessible module as compared to others. However, there are some technicalities where you might get stuck.

Getting Stuck in practice tests is okay, but you must not be unprepared while sitting in the Real PTE Exam.

#1 Understand The Tasks Questions Difference.

The Listening section tasks mentioned above are sometimes similar to each other, and at the same time, very different from one another.

In every task, you have a recorded audio clip to listen and answer that task, but the question type is very different in each of the tasks.

#2 Practice daily: today and tomorrow.

You must practice all the tasks listed in the PTE Listening module, however, focusing on only one or two tasks might not get beneficial enough for you as you lose the marks in these unprepared tasks.

#3 Focus On meaning Instead of Words

Learn to the audio clip actively and try to anticipate what is coming next in the clipping. This will be especially useful when you are attempting to select the missing word question.

When you are listening to the audio clipping, write down the keywords, repeated words, and any other words that seem relevant to the topic.

You can practice listening by listening to podcasts, talk shows, and programs on the radio.

#4 Try to Escape from Negative Marking

In multiple-choice questions, there is a negative marking if your answer gets wrong. This can be a huge mistake to avoid that scenario.

For example, if you have chosen the answer in the multiple-choice question and the response was correct, you got 2 points for that; after that, you have selected another solution. This time, the answer is wrong. You will get a -2 score in your overall result.

This simply means that you have to focus on the audio clip and don’t mark the answer if you are not sure.

Podcast really? How will it help my listening score? Does it really matter listening to the podcasts? However, podcasts are a really good resource to enhance your listening skills and help to score the best in your listening practice.
